Skin Toner

Many people don't know that a toner is a good thing to use on your face or body. Is skin toner meant to get rid of extra oil? Getting rid of pores? Moisturize? Make sure that you don't look old Before you try to figure out what toner does for your face, you might be wondering, "What is face toner?" Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about face toner, from what it is to how to use it.

A lot of people do not agree on what toner is, so it's not easy to define. Toner and astringent were often used together in the past. Think about how you used to apply an alcohol-based toner (like Sea Breeze) to your skin when you were a teen in the hope that it would clear your acne for good and never come back. These types of face toners had a drying effect on the skin because of the alcohol in them. However, if you used these toners on a regular basis, your skin would become dry, sting, and even break down the skin barrier over time. The use of face toner has been out of style for a long time now.

What Makes Skin Toner Popular?

Korean 10-step skincare regimens have become very popular around the world, so face toners have come back into style. Toners have a thin, watery texture, and they quickly penetrate the skin to deliver hydration and remove impurities from the surface of the skin, which helps keep the skin healthy.

Most toners on the market today don't have a lot of alcohol in them, and many toners have good ingredients that can help your skin be ready for the rest of your skincare products. They come in many different types, and you may also see them sold under the names "astringents" or even "splashes."

Why Should You Use Skin Toner?

A common myth is that a toner will "tone" your face by shrinking or tightening pores. This is not true. This is not true at all. Pores can't open, close, shrink, or tighten because they don't have muscles around their openings that let them open and close. This is why they can't. So, if a toner doesn't tone your face, what does it do instead of that? In this case, there's no single answer. Not all toners are the same, so there is no single answer. A toner is used to hydrate and clear the skin so that it is ready for the next steps in your skin care routine, such as serums, treatments, and moisturizers, which are all next.

In the past, toners were mostly used by people with oily or acne-prone skin. Today, toners are used by people with all types of skin. If you have a problem with your skin, there are toners on the market that can help. They aren't just for treating acne and oily skin anymore. A toner can be used for things like:

  • Remove any remaining oil, makeup, dirt, and so on after you clean
  • Remove dead skin cells with an exfoliator
  • Add more water to your skin
  • Inflammation and calming your skin are two things you can do

So, you can see, the main reason to use a toner is to make your skin look better when you do the next steps in your skincare.

How To Choose Skin Toner?

It doesn't matter who you are or what you look like! The choice to use a toner really comes down to your own skin needs and the benefits of a specific toner. A hydrating toner with ingredients like glycerin, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide might be good for you if your skin is looking dry, so you might want to use one of these. Even if you have stubborn blackheads, you might want to try a toner with salicylic acid. This acid will break down the oil that's clogged your pores.

Ingredients To Avoid

If you use a face toner with too much alcohol, it will dry your skin, cause irritation, and break down your skin's protective layer. Avoid face toners that contain this type of drying alcohol, which can be found on the ingredient label as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, Alcohol Denat., SD alcohol, or other names. This alcohol can make your face feel dry. This is fine, though, because the product has fatty alcohols like cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol. These don't dry out your skin.

You also don't want to use face toners that have a lot of perfume in them. If you look at the ingredients list, you might see the words "parfum/fragrance" or individual fragrance ingredients, such as hydroxycitronellal, linalool, limonene and coumarin. The term "parfum/fragrance" refers to an unknown mixture of scent chemicals and ingredients used to spread fragrance, like diethyl phthalate.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel is the last face toner ingredient to stay away from. A lot of face toners, especially those made by natural beauty brands, have witch hazel in them. Everything from acne and oily skin to redness and puffy eyes can be helped by witch hazel, it is said. These polyphenolic compounds are called tannins, and witch hazel has a lot of them. Tannins have a drying and constricting effect on the skin when they are applied. However, tannins can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation, especially if they are used for a long time.

When Should You Use Skin Toner?

You can use a toner both in the morning and at night after you clean your face. When you do a good clean, you can get rid of all of the oil, dirt, makeup, and other things that have built up on your skin during the day. This makes your face look clean so that the good things in a toner can more easily get into your skin. So, applying your toner right after you clean gives you better results.

As soon as you're ready, you can put the toner on a cotton pad or into your hand. Make sure your face, neck, and chest are covered with the cotton pad or hands. Always use a serum or moisturizer after you've done your make-up.
